Former Altenstadt Gate

northern city gate

The Altenstädter Gate, along with the toll barrier, was located—until the great city fire of 1839—between the old post office building and the former Peugler bakery. The western part of the building, with its gable facing the street, protected the narrow passageway. Next to it stood the Fronturm (front tower), which served as a judicial prison. It is likely that the Fronbote—a municipal servant and prison warden—also had his quarters there. In 1617, the mayor and the city council were imprisoned here “in a well-deserved punishment in a tower” for disobedience toward the ruling authorities.
