Former monastery

of the Poor School Sisters, built in 1897/98

The original building was completed in 1898 and served as a children’s asylum. In 1908, the Poor School Sisters established the Vohenstrauß Household School—the first of its kind—specifically for daughters of farmers. Its purpose was to help rural girls remain competitive in contrast to the so-called “ladies’ academies” for upper-class daughters and to counter the migration of maids to the cities.
