Former upper gate

southern city gate

The Upper Gate (Oberes Tor) was not located directly at the upper end of the town, but rather at the level of today’s restaurant friedrich. It was a large, freestanding building with a massive gabled roof positioned perpendicular to the street. The structure covered an area of approximately 16 by 8 meters, and the gate passage was about 7 meters long. After the great city fire of 1839, which also devastated the upper part of town, today’s Friedrichstraße was widened, and the gate was demolished as it had become an obstacle to traffic.
